at 11:55AM, 1:55PM, and 3:55PM
What if you could look 10, or even 15 years younger than your biological age? Suzanne's guest, world-renown heart surgeon, professor, and author Dr. Mehmet Oz, believes you can! He feels that a positive outlook and healthy lifestyle can help a person to age better and feel younger.
Turning Back The Clock
Everyone knows that an inactive lifestyle can negatively affect the body's systems, which in turn, can cause people to age more quickly. But what level of exercise do we need to have on a daily basis to build strong bones? Dr. Oz suggests working out with a lightweight dumbbell set. Even if it's only a couple of reps a day, the weights will help to increase flexibility and circulation.
Cardiovascular fitness is key to staying fit! If you are the type of person that always opts to take an elevator or escalator instead of the stairs, that simple choice is eliminating cardio exercise from your day. Try to become more conscious of the times when you take the "easy" way out, such as taking the elevator or driving to a store that is a block away. Walk instead!
While exercise if one of the most important ways to stay trim, eating the right foods is equally as important. Foods that are high in fiber and protein will give you the sense of being full, and hold you over longer until your next meal. Avoid refined and processed foods such as candy, canned vegetables and fast foods. Instead, opt for foods rich in nutrients such as berries, beans and cruciferous vegetables.
Relax!
If you have ever seen a photo of Abraham Lincoln prior to the Civil War and compared it to one taken after, it's obvious that stress alone can age a person. Minimal stress if okay for the body because it gets our endorphins going and keeps us "on our toes." But chronic stress can raise blood pressure, weaken the immune system and contribute to heart disease.
With the chaos of everyday life, it can be hard to take time away to de-stress. Dr. Oz suggests finding an alternative way to relieve stress, such as Tai Chi, meditation or yoga. At first, it may be hard to clear your mind and focus on relaxing. Dr. Oz mentions that meditation takes practice, so guided imagery or relaxation tapes may be of help.
