RV’ing

at 11:55AM, 1:55PM, and 3:55PM

When the kids have packed up and moved away and your 9-5 job is a thing of the past, what is there to do with all that extra time? Why not hop in an RV and take a trip down Route 66! That’s exactly what a growing number of baby-boomers are opting to do--in fact, nearly 10% of Americans over 55 own an RV.

While most RVers say they love the sense of community and camaraderie among RV Club members, seniors especially enjoy it because they feel like they are doing more than simply “sitting around” after retirement. Older Americans are also more active then in the past, and choose more adventurous hobbies such as hiking and biking to pass the time. This helps to explain the increasing numbers of seniors heading out onto the open road. Meet The Members
John Reynolds is the President of the Penn Coachmen RV Club. He and his wife Jane, both in their late fifties, have been RVing for more than 30 years together. They began their travels in a pop-up trailer, but have since upgraded to a luxurious “Class A” RV, complete with a roomy “living” area, kitchen, 1 ½ baths, a queen size bed and many other amenities. Out of all the many places they have visited over the years, John says their favorite was Alaska because of the beautiful scenery and the feeling that they were visiting uncharted territory.

Robert and Norma Moss are both in their sixties, and have been seeing the country through the windows of their RVs for most of their adult lives. While they took a break from camping to raise their children, they returned to the lifestyle they love in the late 90’s when Robert became involved with a fundraiser for his Alma Mater, Lafayette College. The idea was to visit as many U.S cities named Lafayette, and to date, they have covered most of the cities with the namesake on the East. They plan to finish their “mission,” which will take them out to the Southwest and up the California coast.

Carroll and Dorie Pensinger began RVing about 25 years ago. Originally, they weren’t into camping at all, but after visiting some friends in their RV, they became hooked. Both are 77 years young, and claim that they will continue to travel as long as they’re in good health. While they also say that their favorite getaway was a trip to Alaska, they also enjoy annual visits to the shores on the East Coast and wintering in Florida.
